Pausing a Membership
You can pause, or put a membership on hold from the membership detail page. To do this first view the details of a created membership:
Next, view the details of the client's purchased membership and click the "Actions" then the "Pause membership" button:
Pausing a membership will pause it immediately or at a specific date and will not take any future membership renewal payments until the membership is reactivated.
While a membership is paused, a client cannot use the membership. However, if they registered for a future class using the membership, that registration will still be valid and must be manually canceled if you choose to do so.
Any digital content purchases from your store that are tied to the membership will no longer be available to your client until the membership is reactivated.
When pausing the membership, you can choose to optionally unpause the membership on a specific date or Immediately.
If your subscription to OfferingTree is canceled, your active memberships will be put on hold. If you reactivate your subscription, you will need to manually reactivate the subscription.
Reactivating a Membership
To reactivate a membership, simply click the "Reactivate membership" button.
If a membership is paused mid-billing period, the balance of that billing period is restored when the membership is reactivated. For example, if there are 7 days left in a monthly membership when it is paused, those 7 days are restored when the membership is reactivated and the next billing period will only start 7 days after the membership is reactivated.
By default, only you as the business owner can pause and reactivate memberships. To let clients pause on their own, see Allowing Clients to Pause Their Membership below.
Allowing Clients to Pause Their Membership
Depending on your subscription plan, you can enable a self-service option that lets clients pause their memberships directly from their online account.
Setting Up a Membership Pause Policy
To enable and configure self-service pauses for a specific membership type:
- Go to your Memberships tab and click on the three dots to Edit the membership plan you wish to update.
- Locate the Client Pause Policy section.
- Toggle on Allow clients to pause this membership.
- Configure your policy rules:
- Billing Cycle Requirement: Set how many billing cycles a client must complete before they are allowed to pause (e.g., after 1, 2, or 3 cycles).
- Advance Notice: Define how much notice clients must give before a pause takes effect (e.g., 48 hours notice). Leave it blank if you do not need advanced notice.
- Pause Duration: Specify the shortest (minimum) and longest (maximum) duration allowed for a single pause (e.g., minimum 7 days, maximum 3 weeks).
- Pause Limits: Set the maximum number of times a client can pause their membership within a 12-month period (e.g., 2 times per year).
- Click Update to save your changes.
Note: Any manual pauses processed by an admin on behalf of a client will still count toward the client's annual pause limit.
How It Works for Your Clients
Once enabled, clients can manage their own pauses by logging into their account:
- The client navigates to their Membership tab.
- They will see the option to pause their membership alongside a summary of their remaining pause allowance for the next 12 months.
- When selecting a pause window, the system automatically enforces your policy rules (such as advance notice requirements and min/max duration limits).
- Automatic Class Cancellations: Any upcoming classes or bookings scheduled during the selected pause period will be automatically canceled.
